Yeah, I'm talking about modern day Texas.

The mayors of North Queensland genuinely want to split from the rest of the state. It is freaking bizarre:

After that election campaign I wouldn't have faith Bitar or Arbib could shoot fish in a bucket let alone arrange a simple strategy to turn the focus back on the Libs.

Your suggestions are good but I have little doubt with those guys pulling the strings, playing out their West Wing fantasies, Labor would get pummeled again, no matter how simple the selling point is.

These brain dead farks couldn't even sell to the public that this government steered the country through the economic crisis - a point a Liberal government would have sailed home on. Never underestimate how incompetent these blokes are.

Glen Munsie was on the radio the other day and he said it was definitely a typo. It is of course the bullodgs who have 6.5 start (massive unders in my opinion).

But I would be assuming it would be corrected by now. Where did you see it ?

Rogers close to being a Bulldog
MAT Rogers can't help but ponder what might've been.

"Not many people know this, but Canterbury actually made me a much better offer than Cronulla to play rugby league [in 1994]," the retiring veteran revealed.

"The Sharks offered about $4000 and the Bulldogs something like $10,000."

With a surname synonymous with the Shire club, Rogers opted for the Sharks - but his reasons weren't purely sentimental.

"No mate," he said

"To tell you the truth I'm just no good with foreign places.

"I'd never lived around Canterbury, so I was bit worried about getting around.

"That's why I took less money and signed for the Sharks.

"But it was a bit hard to swallow when Canterbury won the comp the next year [in 1995] and I'm still searching for a premiership now."

In arguably the best form of his career on the Gold Coast, Rogers has a month left to avoid joining former Sharks teammate Andrew Ettingshausen as one of the true rugby league greats never to win a title.

He ranks Cronulla's preliminary final loss to St George Illawarra in 1999 as the hardest moment to swallow, after the minor premiers blew an 8-0 lead when they were just 40 minutes away from the decider.

"It took me years to get over that," Rogers confessed.

"But at least there was a funny aftermath.

"Back at Sharkies Leagues this car draped in Dragons gear was doing laps of the carpark abusing us.

"They were so busy yelling, they crashed straight into a fence. It lifted a few spirits."

With an injury toll longer than his tattooist's appointment list, there's been plenty of times Rogers has needed cheering up as well.

The 34-year-old guessed he's been under the knife no less than 15 times and rated his first shoulder reconstruction as a defining moment.

"I had it done after my first year in grade and it was agony," he recalled.

"I told my brother [Donny] that if I ever had to go through that again, then I'd retire.

"Funnily enough I had the same thing done seven years later and it didn't seem to hurt as much."

Ironically Rogers is in doubt for tonight's crucial clash against Wests Tigers at Skilled Park with a painful hip pointer injury.

"Probably the only injury I've never had until now."

He was hilarious on The Nation last night - look everyone knows he's loopy, a good example being he wants to half the value of the Aussie dollar to help exports, even if it means taking it out of the hands of The Reserve Bank. But having said he's a fruit-loop (which he is) I'll still say I've heard and learnt more about rural concerns in the last 3 weeks than I have in the last 10 years and that's all thanks to Bob Katter.

And I reckon he let slip their decision last night when he was defending Kevin Rudd (who's a friend of his... who would've thought?). Anyway he said Kev's got a legacy to be proud of - "Guiding Aus through the GFC, establishing the national power grid and delivering the NBN"

.....

.... "Delivering The NBN"???? It ain't delivered yet unless.......

We just had an election that was broadly a referendum on Labor and more specifically a referendum on two stinking state Labor Governments and still the best The Libs could do was a dead-heat.

Remember, this last election (in fact the whole last year) there has been little or no scrutiny applied to Tony and good luck to him as he made sure all the attention was on Labor and Labor was stupid enough to help him.

But we go again he's not gonna be able to run the whole campaign on four lines and a small target strategy his time. In fact I reckon the scrutiny will be more on him than Labor now Rudd's corpse is cold and Tony's done such a good job being an idiot the last week. What do you thinks gonna happen the first time he uters "we'll stop the debt"? I'll tell you what - everyone will be saying "Even if it costs us a billiiiiiion dollars."

Everything he's gained last year has essentially been lost in a week. Labor's spin doctors would already be waiting with "Joe Hockeys big black hole" (a frightening mental image) and Dr Evil's "I'll give you a billiiiiiiion dollars" campaign.

Tony goes to another camapaign the campaign this time will be a referendum on him just as much as The Labor brand. The Labor brand may be damaged severely, but brand Tony Abbott is dead, buried and cremeated. He's got to win this one because he won't be around for the next, nor will his all but invisible mate Joe Hockey.

Malcolm knew what he was doing all along even if nobody else did. 6 months, 1 year, 3 years it's gonna be J. Gillard v M. Turnbull.*

*provided Labor win this one of course - and after seeing the 3 Inds on The Nation last night for an hour, Labor's got them I would think and so do most who watched.

THE controversial betting plunge on the Cowboys-Bulldogs encounter in round 24 was not confined to NSW. The Herald has learnt that apart from TAB Sportsbet and other bookmakers, most of the other bets on the North Queensland penalty goal to open the scoring were placed through UNiTAB in Queensland.

The match, which is at the centre of an investigation being conducted by detectives from the State Crime Command in NSW, was played in Townsville a fortnight ago.

First scoring play is generally regarded as a novelty option, with little interest in a penalty goal since it happens so infrequently to begin the scoring. Even though the plunge didn't prove successful, the highly unusual nature of it aroused the suspicion of the NRL.

North Queensland had the option to open the scoring with an easy penalty goal, after Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy was penalised for not getting off the tackled player quickly enough in the second minute, but they elected to take a quick tap and scored a try instead.

After news of the league's investigation first broke, Tandy vehemently denied having been involved in any wrongdoing. Yesterday, he was surrounded by television cameras as he left Bulldogs training, and spoke briefly.

"I can't say anything more, while the investigation is going on," Tandy said. Asked if he was "hurt that it keeps coming towards you", Tandy replied: "Yeah, 100 per cent."

A strike force from within the State Crime Command's Casino and Racing Investigation unit is conducting the investigation, after the league detailed its concerns to police at a meeting on Tuesday.

Also at the meeting was Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy, who had been collecting betting information and CCTV footage from TAB outlets on the league's behalf.

Yesterday, Murrihy told the Herald: "We have sourced the [betting] figures from everything now. I have today given the NRL an estimation of the extent of the bets that were placed, and we're still waiting on some of the TV footage."

The police investigation is expected to take weeks, and it is unlikely there will be a result before the grand final is played, on October 3.

The Herald understands police were motivated to become involved not only because there was a reasonable chance of criminal activity had, but also because of their general distaste at the thought a major sport could be corrupted.

It won't be electoral suicide for Bob Katter to back Labor.

People up there would vote for Bob Katter no matter what. They don't give a shit about Labor or Liberal up there. They are their own universe and hate any outside influence.

Case in point: have a look at Katter's moves for North QUeensland to become its own state seperate from the rest of Queensland.

Just like freaking Texas.

If he was vengeful he would have made a big song and dance why he'd never back the Liberal etc. but he gave a reasoned explanation and unlike the three amigos, lapping up their time in the sunshine, decided to make a considered decision promptly.

His original conflict with the Liberals was never partisan and seemed more born out of frustration that his warnings were being ignored rather than vengeance. He wasn't a left wing hack, the bloke was a card carrying Liberal who disputed the reasons for going to war in Iraq on an intelligence basis. He disputed the ramped up claims that there were WOMDs in Iraq - and he was proved right in the end. He was doing his job - trying to provide intelligence to a government that didn't want to hear it.

And he originally supported the invasion of Afghanistan. His change of heart on that war isn't partisan either - he criticized both Labor and Liberal this campaign for what he sees as bogus justifications for continuing the war in Afghanistan.

started the year with one of our marquee players wanting out.

our team went from a consistent performer who always gave a good account to a pathetic shadow of their former self.

finish the year with a betting scandal that may hang over the club for months to come and has the capacity to become as damaging as the salary cap and coffs scandals.

I think the rural independents will splinter. I am not sure which way but I don't think the Coalition is willing to make the sacrifices to get the deal over the line or have the personalities or leadership to make it work.

One of the major problems for Gillard is that I think she is being pulled left by the Greens and will struggle to keep balance when she is pulled right by some of the independents. Having said that, I think Gillard is quite good at spinning it by saying the right things on political reform and backing down on Labor's mistakes.

I think Abbott has lost too much credibility as a result of dithering on referring his election campaign promises to Treasury, the subsequent loss of face and offering a bucket load of cash to Wilkie to build a new hospital.

The danger for the independents is that by cooperating with Labor, I think it probably against the popular sentiment in their electorates. I think it creates a major risk for them at the next election.

Hodkinson the last stand for Kimmorley

From: The Australian
September 01, 2010 12:00AM

BRETT Kimmorley has every reason to give Trent Hodkinson a lesson at Brookvale Oval on Sunday,

But the Bulldogs halfback says he has no plans to take the Manly No 7 to school just yet.
Kimmorley will play his final game this weekend before retiring and moving into a coaching role at Canterbury in 2011.
It is fitting his last match will be against Hodkinson, given the Bulldogs recruited the Sea Eagles halfback this year to replace Kimmorley at the club.
"I look forward to working with Trent next year," Kimmorley said yesterday. "At the moment, I'm playing for Canterbury and he's playing for Manly so we'll get through this game, I'll shake his hand and say 'I'll look forward to working with you'."
While there was a lot of emotion around Kimmorley and fullback Luke Patten's final home game for the club against Penrith at ANZ Stadium on Monday night, the Bulldogs No 7 admitted this week might be tougher when it hits him that it will be his last game.

"I think Sunday at Brookvale when I finally walk off and think 'Wow, that's it', I don't know how I'm going to feel but I look forward to preparing well this week and having a good performance," Kimmorley said.
"This is my last game ever and for a lot of players their last game for five or six months, so if you don't turn up and give it your all, it's a long time before you get to play another game."
Kimmorley was yesterday still coming to grips with the disappointing finish to his final home game for the club at ANZ Stadium on Monday night, which saw Penrith snatch victory after he had a field goal attempt charged down.
He joked that he told his children the kick looked good for the first 30 centimetres and while he may not have got the fairytale finish he was hoping for, he still enjoyed the night.
"It was disappointing the result but I thought everything the fans had done and everything the club did was all to script," Kimmorley said.
"It doesn't end the fact I had a wonderful night. It was our last home game at ANZ and my family were a big part of the experience.
"That's probably been the story of our year -- we've been in a lot of games and unfortunately at the end something goes against us.
"It was the 80th minute last night, they got a charge-down and went the length of the field."
Apart from the field-goal incident, Kimmorley turned in a vintage performance for the Bulldogs, setting up two tries, turning in a terrific kick-chase game, and terrorising Frank Pritchard with a series of crunching tackles.
Despite his contribution, and the fact Canberra, Parramatta and Cronulla were prepared to offer him a one-year deal to prolong his playing career, Kimmorley said he had no regrets about retiring to take up a coaching role.
"Even through some good games I played when I was trying to make the decision, one game doesn't change in 12 months how your body is going to feel," he said.
"You can always lift for special occasions and once I made my decision the other day I knew I had two games to go."

Labor's the ones that would welcome another election tomorrow let alone 6 months.

I'm flabbergasted over what Abbott's done to his image today - "I offer you a billiiiiiiiiiiiion dollars!". There's a thousand Dr Evil (Austin Powers) parodies right there. Matter of fact first ones hit the net already at The Punch.

He must win this one because he won't be around for the next.

Abbott has a habit of winning after it seems all is lost. He did this when he got his Rhodes scholarship, his pre-selection for the Warringah seat, and getting the opposition leadership. However this time I think he will have trouble getting himself off the canvas. Until now, Abbott has done amazingly well. It should be remebered, when Abbott took the over, Labor's primary vote in the polls was 55%. It is now 38%.

The Hobart Hospital blunder was unbelievable. Any one with half a brain knew that Wilkie was either going to back Labor or be unaligned with a left leaning bias. The strange thing is, if Wilkie considered it overkill to build a new hospital, why did he list it as one of his demands?

Abbott's only hope now is that the rural independents respect the wish of their constituents. It should be remebered that they sit in 3 of the 4 seats with the nation's lowest ALP and Green votes. So it will be electoral suicide for any of them if they back Gillard.

I agree with Todd H, that if the rurals don't support Abbott, he is probably gone.

Maybe but do you think Abbott will lead the opposition. I thought the guy did a remarkable job during the election campaign and on election night but since then I think he has performed poorly. Labor will no doubt run a much better ad campaign that woiuld highlight the new economic growth figures as well as reference Abbott's 'black hole'. Those ad's with Costello giving him shite about not being a good econimist may have even more impact next time round. I reckon if Abbott doesn't get the support of the final 3 independents he is almost done.
